WHAT IS THE I.L.W.U.

In 1934, a small group of dockworkers along the West Coast, led by a humble immigrant, went up against some of the world’s most powerful bosses and, in so doing, changed the face of the workplace and the American labor movement forever. The epic, bloody west coast Longshore strike -- led by Harry Bridges -- ultimately led to the birth of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. The workers won their principal goals of a single contract to cover all of the work handled at West Coast ports and the union gained control over how jobs on the docks got assigned.

WHAT IS A DISTRICT COUNCIL

The Southern California District Council is one of four district councils in the ILWU. Each is made of up delegates elected by the rank-&-file members of the individual ILWU Locals in their region. Also represented on the SCDC are delegates from the Southern California Pensioners Group (which is the organization of retired longshore workers, marine clerks and foremen) and ILWU Ladies' Auxiliary No. 8. The District Council is currently led by President Rich Dines (ILWU Local 13), Vice President Ed Royles (ILWU Local 68) and Sec.-Treasurer Luisa Gratz (ILWU Local 26).

HONORING HARRY BRIDGES: The SCDC worked with Long Beach officials to honor the founder of the ILWU with an official "Harry Bridges Day" in the city. Above: Members of the ILWU family celebrate the Long Beach City Council motion to honor Bridges. Below: The Harry Bridges Day community pancake breakfast included local elected officials working alongside ILWU SCDC volunteers to feed area residents. Taking part were Congresswoman Laura Richardson, LB Mayor Bob Foster, Sen. Alan Lowenthal, Board of Equalization Member Judy Chu, Assemblyman Warren Furutani, and LB councilmembers Val Lerch, Dee Andrews, and Patrick O'Donnell.
